Our mole check service

We provide a fast, expert diagnosis of an abnormal, new or changing mole which may be suspect for skin cancer.

Your assessments will be carried out by Dr. Gino Vissers, a consultant plastic surgeon with specialist expertise in skin cancer and dermoscopy, ensuring accurate, same-day reassurance or a clear treatment plan where needed.

A mole check is always offered as part of a comprehensive full skin examination from head to toe, as studies show that up to 8% of patients are found to have a second suspicious lesion they were not aware of. Our thorough skin cancer screening service is designed to detect problems early, when treatment is simplest and most effective. Conveniently located in Harley Street, Marylebone, we welcome patients seeking rapid access to expert mole checks, skin cancer diagnosis, and complete skin assessments with a focus on safety, precision and peace of mind.

When is a mole check recommended?

If you have noticed a changing mole, discolouration, or new lesion, early assessment is critical.

A mole check is recommended if:

  • You want an abnormal, new, or changing mole checked
  • You have multiple moles
  • You have seen your GP and would like a second opinion
  • You had a sunburn or extensive sun exposure in the past
  • A member of your family has been diagnosed with skin cancer

Our skin clinics include a thorough full-body skin check to assess your risk and provide personalised advice on the best next steps.

What to expect during a mole check?

During our mole check consultations in Harley Street, you will receive a full body skin check (from head to toe), including a  dermoscopic and risk assessment of all moles on your body.

Dermoscopy is a simple, non-invasive way to look more closely at your skin, especially moles or unusual spots. Using a special handheld device called a dermatoscope, Dr. Vissers can see details beneath the surface of the skin that are not visible to the naked eye.   This helps to assess whether a mole or skin lesion is harmless (benign) or needs further investigation, such as a biopsy.

You will receive your recommendation immediately, this may include reassurance or a clear treatment plan where needed.

What happens after my mole check?

Dr. Vissers will advise on one of the following:

  • Reassurance:
If your mole is benign and does require no further action, Dr. Vissers can provide you with immediate reassurance. However, removal can always be arranged for aesthetic reasons if you desire.

  • Monitoring:
Some lesions are pre-malignant and may have a low risk of becoming a skin cancer. For these lesions, monitoring may be a good option. Dr. Vissers can advise you on the interval between mole checks, or you can have the lesion removed for reassurance.

  • Removal of your lesion:
When potentially malignant diagnosis is given, Dr. Gino will confirm whether removal of the mole is advised as part of the treatment.
Mole removal surgery procedures can be performed under local anaesthesia in our Harley Street clinic with minimal downtime.
