What is an otoplasty?
An ear correction, also known as otoplasty or ear reshaping surgery, is a surgical procedure aimed at repositioning the ears for a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. It can address concerns such as prominent ears, ear asymmetry, or stretched earlobes following earrings.
Prominent or protruding ears can be a source of self-consciousness and may affect an individual's confidence, particularly during childhood and adolescence. Otoplasty offers a safe and effective solution, allowing patients to achieve a more balanced and harmonious facial profile.
Should I undergo an otoplasty?
An otoplasty is a good procedure for anyone who wants to reshape or reposition their ears.
During your consultation, Dr. Gino Vissers will assess your ear anatomy, and determine whether you are a good candidate for an otoplasty.
An otoplasty can treat any of the following issues:
- Prominent or protruding ears
- Aesthetically unpleasing ear shape
- Stretched ear lobes due to earrings
- Ear asymmetry

What happens during the procedure?
During the procedure, Dr. Gino Vissers will make discreet incisions, carefully hidden within the natural creases behind the ears. Through these incisions, the cartilage is sculpted and reshaped to create a more desirable ear shape and position. Excess skin may also be removed, if necessary, to achieve a natural-looking result.
Otoplasty can be performed on both children and adults. For children, it is recommended to undergo the procedure after the age of eight when the ears have reached a stable size and shape. The surgery can significantly enhance a child's self-esteem and prevent potential social challenges associated with prominent ears.
Surgery for ear lobe corrections will be tailored to the size and shape of your individual earlobes and can usually be comfortably performed under local anaesthesia.
What to expect after an otoplasty?
Recovery after an otoplasty involves minimal downtime. Most patients are back to full activity in a few days. Expect some swelling and minimal bruising that will disappear quickly. Any discomfort will be mild and can be easily managed with pain medication.
A headband must be worn day and night for 1 week after the procedure. Dr. Gino Vissers recommends to avoid contact sports following an ear correction for 6 weeks, especially for children.
Dr. Gino Vissers will provide detailed post-operative instructions to promote optimal healing and ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery process.
