What is a breast reduction?

A breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at reducing the size and volume of the breasts.

Breast reduction surgery offers various benefits to women who are living with large, pendulous breasts. By removing fat, glandular tissue, and excess skin from the breast, it will result in a smaller, lighter and firmer bust.  It can help alleviate physical symptoms associated with overly large breasts, such as chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain, bra strap indentations, skin irritation, and difficulty in finding properly fitting clothing. In addition to the functional improvements, breast reduction can enhance the aesthetic appearance of the breasts, creating a more proportionate and balanced silhouette.

Should I undergo a breast reduction?

A breast reduction is a good procedure for anyone who wants to reduce the volume of their breasts, either for aesthetic or functional purposes.

During your consultation, Dr. Gino Vissers will assess your breast size and shape, and determine whether you are a good candidate for a breast reduction.

A breast reduction can treat any of the following issues:

  • Heavy and pendulous breasts
  • Pain in shoulders, neck and back
  • Impaired proper posture
  • Bra strap indentations
  • Limited clothing choices due to large breasts
  • Limited physical activities due to large breasts
  • Skin irritation in the breast folds

What happens during the procedure?

A breast reduction is performed under general anaesthesia. Dr. Gino Vissers will mark your breasts prior to surgery.

When you are asleep, Dr. Gino Vissers will excise the excess skin and breast tissue. The remaining breast tissue will be reshaped and remodelled to create a smaller, lighter breast.  The nipple and areola are lifted to a higher position and often made smaller to achieve a more balanced breast appearance.

At the end of the procedure a drain is placed in each breast to allow removal of postoperative fluid. The drains are usually removed the next day. All incisions are closed with dissolvable stitches and dressings are applied.

What to expect after a breast reduction?

Recovery after breast reduction typically involves some downtime. Patients with an office job will need to take about a week off from work to rest and recover. Expect some swelling and pain for a couple of days after surgery, and you will have prescription pain medication to help you stay comfortable in the early stages of healing. Some mild swelling may last up to several weeks.

At the end of surgery, you will be placed in a medical bra that we provide. You will need to wear the bra provided for 6 weeks; you can not wear underwire bras during this time. You are not allowed to lift any heavy objects or to do intensive sports for 6 weeks, as to not damage your breast reduction.

Dr. Gino Vissers will provide detailed post-operative instructions to promote optimal healing and ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery process.
